Personal trainers in the UK

One-to-one coaching for strength, general fitness, returning after injury or preparing for an event.

What it is

A personal trainer plans and supervises your training, coaches technique and keeps you accountable. Sessions are usually 45–60 minutes, in a gym, outdoors, at home or online.

Who may find it useful

  • People new to training who want to learn technique safely
  • Anyone who trains more consistently with an appointment in the diary
  • People with a specific goal such as an event or returning to sport

What it provides

  • A training plan built around your goal
  • Technique coaching and progression
  • Accountability and review

What it does not provide

  • Treatment for injuries — that is physiotherapy or your GP
  • Clinical nutrition advice or prescribed diets
  • Guaranteed weight or performance outcomes

How to choose a provider in the UK

  • Ask which qualification they hold and whether they carry professional insurance.
  • Ask for experience with people in a similar position to you.
  • Agree how sessions, cancellations and blocks are paid for in writing.
  • If you have a health condition or are pregnant or postnatal, tell them before booking and check they work with that.

Sensible questions to ask

  • What qualification and insurance do you hold?
  • Have you worked with someone with my goal or history before?
  • What happens between sessions — do I get a plan?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
