Sleep coaches and sleep support in the UK

Support for poor sleep ranges from self-help and coaching to CBT for insomnia and, for some conditions, NHS clinical care.

What it is

Sleep coaching usually focuses on routine, timing, light, caffeine, wind-down and worry. CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment for long-term insomnia and is delivered by trained practitioners, including through the NHS.

Who may find it useful

  • People whose sleep has been poor for weeks or months
  • Shift workers and new parents needing a workable routine
  • Anyone wanting structure before considering medication

What it provides

  • Routine and sleep-timing guidance
  • Behavioural approaches such as CBT-I where the practitioner is trained in it

What it does not provide

  • Diagnosis or treatment of sleep apnoea, restless legs or narcolepsy — see your GP
  • Sleeping tablets or any prescription

How to choose a provider in the UK

  • See your GP first if you snore heavily, stop breathing in your sleep, or feel sleepy while driving.
  • 'Sleep coach' is not a protected title in the UK — ask exactly what training they completed.
  • Ask specifically whether they deliver CBT-I and who trained them in it.

Sensible questions to ask

  • What training do you have, and are you supervised?
  • Do you deliver CBT-I, and how is it structured?
  • When would you refer me back to my GP?
