Lisbon has become one of Europe’s most visited cities. Everyone loves the sunny city, from cruisers and digital nomads. Over the years, I have visited several times and look forward to returning. Warm weather, welcoming colors and a laid-back atmosphere make visitors feel welcomed.
A walking tour is the best way to explore a city (especially for those who are visiting it for the first time). When I first arrive in a city, I always take a walking tour. It is the most effective way to meet a guide and get some inside information.
There are many walking tours that you can take to make the most out of your trip. I’ve compiled a list to help you choose the right tour for you – whether it be a free walking tour, gastronomic tours or pub crawls.
Enjoy a Walk
Take Walks is my favourite tour operator. I have taken their tours in Europe. The tours are always both educational and fun. They offer several tours in Lisbon (including food tour). The Lisbon In A Daytour is highly recommended. The tour includes lunch, a river cruise and early entry to the Jeronimos Monastery. They offer the best walking tour in the city.
Lisbon Chill-Out Tours
The three-hour tour is free and takes you to five popular Lisbon neighborhoods: Graca Alfama Baixa Chiado Bairro Alto. It’s a fun and informative way to learn about the history of Lisbon. These tours focus more on the local aspect of Lisbon. This tour is perfect for those on a tight budget who want to get a taste of the city. Remember to tip your guide.
You can make the most out of your stay in Lisbon by taking a walking tour.
1. Devour
They started out in Spain, and soon began offering tours in Lisbon. The tour combines two of Lisbon’s cultural highlights: fado and food. I like their Tasting & Traditions Food Tour. The tour includes a stop at 7 small shops in Lisbon where you can sample up to 9 different foods and drinks. Devour, one of Europe’s best food tours companies, offers two Lisbon tour options.
Starts at 95 EUR for tours.
2. In Lisbon
The company has a wide range of tours, but the Best of Lisbon tour for first-time visitors to Lisbon and those on a budget is incredibly popular. This three-hour walking tour begins at 9:30 am and will take you to some of Lisbon’s most important neighborhoods. You can stop along the way for wine or a taste of the famous pastry (an egg custard). Group tours are limited to 14 participants.
The price of the tour starts at about 18 EUR.
3. The City Guru Street Art Tour
Lisbon is not the only big city in which street art is prevalent. This three-hour walking tour will show you some of the most beautiful works and explain the political and social motives that inspired them. The tours are also led by local street artists, giving you a unique insider look into the city and visiting murals that other tours tend to skip.
The price of the tour starts at about 35 EUR.
4. Pancho Tours
Pancho offers tours throughout the Iberian Peninsula. They use local guides, create itineraries with a focus on tapas, wine and street art and include day trips like Sintra. Their fado tour is my favorite. You’ll discover everything about the melancholic, endemic music of Portugal during this 2.5-hour guided tour. At the end, you’ll have a front row seat to a fado performance in Lisbon.
The price of the tour starts at about 40 EUR.
5. Tourism is not for us
In many European cities there is an overtourism problem, as people are constantly moving from attraction to attraction. We Hate Tourism Tours was born out of the desire to take you on a 3.5 hour walking tour to see how people in Lisbon live. The tour is intimate, with only six participants. Booking in advance is also recommended as the tours are very popular. They are taking people away from the tourist areas to show you real life in Lisbon. This tour is fantastic.
The price of the tour starts at about 40 EUR.
6. Discover Lisbon Pub Crawl
Lisbon’s nightlife is very vibrant these days. If you want to experience it and meet other travellers, then the pub crawl will be a great way to do so. The tour will take you to 3 different spots with free shots at both the first and third stops. There’s also a 1-hour session of unlimited cider or sangria. This is a good option for those traveling alone and looking to make new friends. Although it is not “local”, the experience can be fun.
Starts at 20 EUR.
Lisbon offers walking tours to suit every budget and interest. Every time I go to Lisbon, I take at least two tours. You can ask the locals about where to go and what to do. Take at least one tour while in the city
